BIOGRAPHY

Nick Gianni is a Saxophonist/Flautist raised in New York on a steady diet of Music. His Grandfather played Tenor Sax with local NY big bands and made sure Nick had learned the basics of Piano, Flute, and Saxophone at an early age before moving to Guitar and Bass as a teenager.

Nick began performing at the age of 16, backing up his cousins modern dance performances with minimalist "soundscape music" inspired by Lamount Young/Steve Reich. At the same time Nick was playing Bass with local noise/punk bands giging @ CBGB's, Brownies & The Pyramid on NYC's prolific Lower East Side. Eventually Nick immersed himself in the downtown free jazz scene of the late 1980’s playing in Luther Thomas band, which featured the likes of Dennis Charles, Billy Bang, and On Davis. By 1990, Nick caught the ear of European radio and film star Ursula, whom he immediately went on tour with. Through the 90's Nick began developing his own sound as a Saxophonist/Flautist while continuing to tour playing "Jam" festivals with bands like Vermin Furley, Floater and Upshot. Nick also played with many great African artists, namely Claude Gomiz of Orchestra Baobob fame and Jojo Kuo. Throughout his career Nick has also had the distinction of recording and performing with many other great musicians, including: Dr John, Marshall Allen, Luther Thomas, Kenny Wollesen, Butch Morris, Juini Booth, Daniel Carter, Hugh McCracken, The Brazilian Girls and Snehasish Mozumder.

In addition, Nick has toured extensively throughout Europe and Australia performing on festival stages in France, Switzerland, and Italy, including TV features on Good Morning Australia and MTV Europe. He is a valued studio musician, appearing on many Ayler Records relases, writing and arranging for Pop singer Jill Sobule’s new album and playing on several Live Wired & Tzadic Records releases. Other recordings include underground hip-hop/R&B, house/electro. 2010 release with the Indian/Fusion band SOM, featuring Snehasish Mozumder, is out on Random Chance Records.

More recent accomplishments include performances at the Sant'Anna Arresi Jazz Festival, Central Park Summerstage, the Willisau Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, and a week long artist residency at Mass MOCA facilitating instrument design workshops.

Nick is currently gigging and recording with his new band Nick Gianni's EVOLUTION which incorporates all his influences and experiences.
